Accredited by the American College of Radiology, the Thomas and Dorothy Leavey Radiation Oncology Center at the MemorialCare Todd Cancer Institute (TCI) at Long Beach Medical Center offers a comprehensive program providing a range of radiation therapy options for patients.

At the MemorialCare Todd Cancer Institute, computerized treatment planning systems create 3-dimensional tumor images allowing the care team to design individualized treatment plans that deliver the highest possible dose of radiation to the tumor site while preserving the vital surrounding structures and organs.

Using state-of-the-art radiation therapy equipment, radiation oncologists and medical physicists specifically target tumors minimizing exposure to healthy tissue. Therapies include:

Accelerated Partial Breast Irradiation using IMRT, Mammosite, Contura, interstitial brachytherapy

  • Brachytherapy
  • Brain tumor GBM Treatment using Optune
  • Hyperthermia, external and interstitial
  • Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)
  • Intraoperative Radiation Therapy
  • Rapid Arc Radiation Therapy
  • Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS, SRT, SBRT)
  • Varian-iX (RapidArc, IMRT, IGRT)

Leaders in Radiation Oncology

At the Radiation Oncology Center, a multi-disciplinary team of radiation oncologists, radiation therapists, physicists, nurses, social workers and support staff work together to develop treatment plans that best meet the needs of each patient based on their cancer type.

This specialized team is led by Alam Nisar M. Syed, M.D., who developed a number of revolutionary brachytherapy procedures that have become the standard of care used worldwide.

Under his leadership, we perform more brachytherapy procedures, both inpatient and outpatient, than any other medical center in the United States, including some procedures rarely performed at other hospitals, such as interstitial brachytherapy and intraluminal brachytherapy.

All of our radiation oncologists and medical physicists are faculty members at the University of California Irvine, and involved in the Radiation Oncology Residency training program with UCI, as well as training fellows, radiation oncologists and medical physicists from many states in the U.S., as well as from different countries.
