As screening mammograms detect smaller cancers, minimal breast surgery can be used to remove tumors. In order to localize these small tumors for the breast surgeon, the procedure called preoperative wire localization is utilized. This procedure involves ultrasound or mammography guidance of a delicate wire into the tumor so that the surgeon can locate and perform optimal conservation surgery. This procedure is done on the day of surgery.
