Higher quality images/less pain during procedure means more women opting for life-saving procedure

MemorialCare Breast Center-Laguna Hills, part of MemorialCare Saddleback Medical Center, is first on the West Coast to install Hologic's Clarity HD 3D Mammography™ system. The new technology provides faster, higher resolution of 3D images for radiologists and a more comfortable mammography experience, with low-dose options for patients.

This latest generation 3D mammography system is designed to reveal subtle lesions and fine calcifications not visible with earlier mammographic technology at two times the resolution of standard 3D Mammography. Clarity HD utilizes an advanced, breakthrough detector and innovative imaging algorithm to deliver exceptionally clear 3D images, regardless of breast size or density. Designed to increase clinical confidence and achieve higher accuracy the first time, it detects 20-65 percent more invasive breast cancers and reduces patient recalls up to 40 percent compared to 2D alone.

"Installation of this cutting-edge technology reflects MemorialCare Breast Centers' ongoing commitment to superior breast care and better, earlier breast cancer detection for women of all ages and breast densities," says Gary M. Levine, M.D., Medical Director, MemorialCare Breast Centers.

Clarity HD system includes SmartCurve™ breast stabilization, clinically proven to deliver more comfortable mammograms without compromising image quality. Complaints of pain during mammograms prevent many women from making breast imaging appointments a priority, placing them at risk of a cancer being missed, or diagnosed at a more advanced stage. Improved comfort addresses this challenge, providing a much better patient experience.

SmartCurve's curved surface mirrors the shape of a woman's breast, which reduces pinching. In a recent study comparing SmartCurve breast stabilization to traditional flat compression, SmartCurve improved comfort in 93 percent of women who reported moderate to severe discomfort with standard compression. And 95 percent of those surveyed would recommend facilities using the system.

"With this new technology, we're able to provide a more comfortable mammogram while improving clinical accuracy," explains Dr. Levine. "Screening mammography plays a critical role in early detection of breast cancer. With SmartCurve, we're able to lessen the pain and anxiety associated with mammograms and as a result, increase screening compliance and save lives."

MemorialCare is the only health system in Orange County with breast centers staffed exclusively by dedicated breast radiologists. The fellowship trained, sub-specialized breast radiologists are focused exclusively on breast imaging and intervention. Clinical studies have shown that this focus results in more accurate imaging interpretation and a higher quality of care.

"We're excited to study this first-of-its-kind imaging device and other new advanced technologies as we continually strive to offer our patients the best breast care possible," adds Dr. Levine.
