The Magnet Recognition Program designates organizations worldwide where nursing leaders successfully align their nursing strategic goals to improve the organization’s patient outcomes. The Magnet Recognition Program provides a roadmap to nursing excellence, which benefits the whole of an organization. To nurses, Magnet Recognition means education and development through every career stage, which leads to greater autonomy at the bedside. To patients, it means the very best care, delivered by nurses who are supported to be the very best that they can be.
In 2023, the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) honored Saddleback Medical Center's ICU with the Silver Beacon Award, recognizing it as one of the nation's top hospital critical care units. According to the AACN, for patients and their families, this award "signifies exceptional care through improved outcomes and greater overall satisfaction." For nurses, it "signals a positive and supportive work environment with greater collaboration between colleagues and leaders, higher morale and lower turnover." The award is active for three years.
Exceptional People. Extraordinary Care. Every Time.
These words embody the spirit of MemorialCare and inspire us each day to roll up our sleeves and set about working to achieve our mission to “improve the health and wellbeing of individuals, families and our communities.”
MemorialCare has been a vision since the early 1900s when our first hospital was established in Long Beach. Since then, we have grown to be a leading nonprofit, integrated health system in Los Angeles and Orange Counties that includes four top hospitals – Long Beach Medical Center, Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital Long Beach, Orange Coast Medical Center and Saddleback Medical Center; award-winning medical groups – MemorialCare Medical Group and Greater Newport Physicians; MemorialCare Select Health Plan; and convenient outpatient health centers including imaging, breast, surgical and dialysis centers throughout the region.
Along with our commitment to providing extraordinary healthcare to our communities, we work hard to provide an exceptional working environment for our people. At our core is a dedication to the pursuit of best-practice medicine. Our physicians and staff members study the best and most effective treatments and work to implement them at all our locations. The results are outcomes that frequently exceed state and national averages.
For our patients and families, it means a superior choice of healthcare services.
For our employees, it means a chance to do your best work alongside a diverse and passionate group of individuals who strive daily to be ‘simply better.’ Expect to be energized by our commitment to innovation and continuous learning while gaining opportunities for professional and personal growth.
Simply Better Trust
The purpose of the Simply Better Trust is to improve the patient and family experience by empowering staff to create an extraordinary experience when appropriate or to provide service recovery when a patient/family member has been inconvenienced by a service issue. Our nurses can use up to $100 in purchasing an item for their patients.
Why Our Employees Love MemorialCare
Nora Ann Sangirardi
BSN, RN, CMSRN, RN-BC, Clinical Supervisor
In 2012, MemorialCare Saddleback Medical Center (SMC) took a chance on a new grad. I started on the night shift, finished my graduate residency and a year later, completed CRM training. Always open to growth opportunities, I obtained my chemotherapy certification and became a Clinical Coordinator. I am so grateful for the support and open-door culture of my manager, director, and CNO.
In 2015, I graduated from MemorialCare’s Nurse Leadership Academy and, today, I am a Clinical Supervisor on my home unit. I cannot imagine working with a better team. Along with working well together and providing the best for our patients, we appreciate and
support one another and celebrate our achievements. We’ve even done charity walks and, this year, we reached our goal of donating 25 units of blood. I love the people I work with and truly believe there is no better culture than ours at SMC.
Although I’ve worked as a nurse at hospitals across the country, I was always searching for a community to build a career. I finally found it at MemorialCare Saddleback Medical Center (SMC). Shortly after I started, I knew this is where I wanted to be. I saw a community of people that really cared about each other and their own professional growth. Within a few weeks of working as a travel nurse at SMC, my family and I decided to move over 2,000 miles to make California our new home. It was the leadership on the unit, nursing administration, and the overall support from coworkers that made me change my career path from CRNA to a degree in healthcare administration. I was supported every step of the way, from a bedside nurse to a critical care supervisor, hospital supervisor and then finally a position in management. On this journey, I’ve made connections, built lasting friendships and become a part of a community that feels like family.
Leslie A. Chavez
BSN, RN, PCCN
I have worked at MemorialCare Orange Coast Medical Center (OCMC) for more than five years. Prior to coming here, I worked at a different hospital that was farther away.
When I applied to OCMC, I wasn’t just looking for a shorter commute; I was also hoping to find my “forever home.” I really wanted to work for an organization that would allow me to grow as a nurse. One of the things that attracted me to MemorialCare was the longevity of its employees. I believe this is because, in general, the staff is actually happy to be here and enjoys what they do.
The leadership has been so supportive, attentive and caring. I think it is amazing how encouraging this organization is in helping us reach our individual professional goals. I am so glad that I chose to work at OCMC and I look forward to being here for the remainder of my nursing career!
