Stephen Tang, MD

Dr. Tang, grew up in Montreal, Canada with his twin brother David and older sister Virginia. He says he is truly grateful to his parents, Mary and Peter , for giving him the wonderful gift of education and for being such great examples of unselfish love and patience.

After completing his undergraduate and medical school training at McGill University in Montreal, Dr. Tang moved to the United States to pursue a family practice residency at the University of California, Irvine. After one year of family practice, he switched to pediatrics and completed his residency training in 1991. The following year, he continued his education in pediatrics as chief resident/infectious disease clinical coordinator/clinical instructor at the combined UCI/CHOC training program. During this year, he fell in love with his wife, Kimberly Douglas, M.D., FAAP, who is also a pediatrician.

From there, they embarked on an adventure to his wife’s native Hawaii. While in Hawaii, he worked at a community clinic on the Waianae Coast and became a clinical instructor at the University of Hawaii’s John A. Burns School of Medicine. He subsequently became the medical director of the Homeless Outreach Program. Dr. Tang says, “This was truly an amazing experience for a kid who grew up in the frozen tundra–going to work in shorts, seeing patients on the beach and speaking the Hawaiian language. Quite a culture shock!”

Dr. Tang and his wife enjoyed five wonderful years in Hawaii and say they certainly experienced the true Aloha of the Islands. After long deliberation, they decided to return to the mainland to start a family. They returned to their academic roots and settled in Orange County, where Dr. Tang became an assistant professor of pediatrics at UCI, cared for medically fragile children and headed the Spina Bifida clinic.
In 2001, he began his career with the SOCPA family, and in 2003 became a partner in the group and currently practices in the Rancho Santa Margarita office. His special interests are obesity, asthma, allergy and sports medicine.

He and his wife live in Aliso Viejo with their son Matthew, twin daughters Nicole and Erin, and their bunny, Happy. Dr. Tang says that since the birth of his first child, he has realized how much he truly loves being a father and a pediatrician. He is active with Corpus Christie Church, Health Ministry and his hobbies include martial arts, cycling and kayaking.

“I believe that the practice of pediatrics should blend the science of medicine with the humanity of family, sprinkled with a touch of humor. I do take my job seriously and I am aware that parents have entrusted me with the care of their child’s well being. I am also aware that there are many ways to treat a given illness or concern and we, as physicians, must tailor the management in the context of the patient and family.”
