Katy Hyman is the program coordinator for the Palliative Care Program at Long Beach Memorial. She has been involved in advance care planning for more than 10 years, working to raise awareness on the importance of having the conversation both in the hospital setting and out in the community. In addition to her role at Long Beach Memorial, Katy has been a board-certified chaplain for more than 10 years.
While 90 percent of people think it’s important to talk to loved ones about end-of-life care, especially in the event of critical illness or injury, less than 30 percent actually have the conversation. Through the Long Beach has the Conversation initiative, the Palliative Care Program at Long Beach Medical Center provides resources and tips to help you “have the conversation” — while it may not be easy, it’s important.
