As an older adult, physical activity is one of the most important things you can do for a healthier, better retirement.
Physical activity can help control blood pressure, body weight and cholesterol as well as prevent or delay health issues often associated with aging such as heart disease, diabetes and osteoporosis. Regular physical activity can also improve your strength and balance so you can remain independent. Plus it gives you more energy to do the things you want to do, like travel, play with grandchildren or enjoy a round of golf with friends.
Find an activity you enjoy doing, such as walking, bike riding, dancing or swimming. For those with joint issues, water exercises or non-weight-bearing exercises, such as bicycling, rowing, or elliptical machines are easier on the joints. It’s not necessary to join a gym or to take up a new form of strenuous exercise. Physical activity can mean raking the leaves, gardening or cleaning the house.
