Rays of Hope

MemorialCare Saddleback Medical Center has been at the forefront of the fight against cancer since the hospital opened in 1974. The MemorialCare Cancer Institute at Saddleback Medical Center is home to leading-edge technology and expert clinical staff dedicated to the early diagnosis, treatment and education of patients with cancer.

“Among the advanced technologies at the Cancer Institute is the TrueBeam™ and VitalBeam™ medical linear accelerators,” states Linda Chan, M.D., medical director of radiation oncology. “This radiation treatment technology destroys cancer cells, while minimizing damage to healthy tissue using unparalleled accuracy and precision.”

The ability for TrueBeam and VitalBeam to deliver radiation with such precision is unprecedented. To improve the level of precision needed, Saddleback Medical Center recently implemented AlignRT, an optical guidance technology that tracks the patient’s movements and provides CT scans and movie-like images so the cancer can be targeted with even further accuracy. AlignRT does this by accounting for the movement of a patient’s body while they breathe to help reduce radiation damage. Saddleback Medical Center is the only cancer institute in South Orange County with TrueBeam and AlignRT technology.
