The program has received multiple consecutive three-star ratings for Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) and the Multi-Procedural category from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS). These distinctions represent the highest national recognition for cardiac surgery quality and outcomes.

Orange Coast Medical Center has received more STS three-star awards for CABG and multi-procedural cardiac surgery than any other hospital in Orange County, reflecting the program’s sustained commitment to excellence in patient care.

Dr. Lam is among the most experienced cardiac surgeons serving Orange County and performs a high volume of coronary bypass and complex cardiac procedures each year. He is dedicated to delivering meticulous, evidence-based surgical care while guiding patients and their families through some of the most critical moments of their lives.

Surgical Expertise

Dr. Lam’s clinical expertise includes:

  • Coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG)
  • Heart valve repair and replacement
  • Complex multi-procedural cardiac surgery
  • Aortic surgery
  • Advanced and high-risk cardiac operations

His approach emphasizes careful preoperative planning, precise surgical technique, and attentive postoperative care to achieve the best possible outcomes for every patient.

From “Boat People” to Heart Surgeon

Dr. Lam’s journey to becoming a heart surgeon began long before he entered the operating room.

Born in Vietnam, he fled the country in 1981 as one of the Vietnamese “boat people.” At just ten years old, he escaped with his siblings and grandmother aboard a small fishing boat in search of freedom. After two perilous days at sea, they were rescued by a passing ship and brought to a refugee camp in Malaysia before eventually immigrating to the United States.

Arriving in America at age eleven without speaking English, Dr. Lam embraced the opportunities offered through education. Seven years later, he graduated as valedictorian of his high school class and was admitted to Yale University. There he completed a combined degree program, earning both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry while conducting research on Lyme disease vaccine development.

He later attended Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where his interests in immunology, transplantation science, and surgery converged. During medical school, he was awarded a Howard Hughes Fellowship to conduct xenotransplantation research studying the immunologic barriers to heart transplantation. Working alongside immunologists, pathologists, and surgeons, he helped develop experimental immunosuppressive strategies that extended survival of transplanted pig hearts in nonhuman primates—important early work in transplantation science.

Dr. Lam continued research and advanced surgical training at several leading institutions, including Stanford University and University of California San Francisco East Bay, before completing cardiothoracic surgery fellowship training at the University of Southern California.

Caring for Patients and the Community

Today, Dr. Lam cares for patients throughout Orange County, including Fountain Valley, Westminster, Garden Grove, Huntington Beach, and the Little Saigon community—one of the largest Vietnamese communities outside Vietnam.

He is deeply committed to ensuring that patients and their families feel informed, supported, and confident throughout every step of treatment. Dr. Lam believes exceptional cardiac surgery requires not only technical precision but also clear communication, compassion, and a deep respect for the trust patients place in their physicians.

From a small fishing boat in the South China Sea to the operating room, Dr. Lam carries his family’s story with him every day. Their sacrifices and resilience continue to inspire his commitment to caring for the hearts of patients and families in the community he now calls home.

For Dr. Lam, repairing the human heart is both a scientific discipline and a profound privilege.
