About Me
Dr. Sunayna Bakaya is board-certified in diagnostic radiology and specializes in oncological, gastrointestinal and women’s imaging and ultrasonography. She is the Medical Director of the MemorialCare Imaging Center at Long Beach Medical Center.
Dr. Bakaya received her medical degree at Grant Medical College, Maharashtra University of Health Sciences in Mumbai INDIA. She completed her internship at The George Washington University School of Medicine & Health Sciences; her residency in diagnostic radiology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine; and a fellowship in abdominal imaging the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. She recently received a Master of Medical Management at University of Southern California Marshall School of Business.
She was involved in the National Lung Screening Trial while completing her residency at the University of Pittsburgh, one of the trial centers, in 2007. This is the pivotal study for lung screening whose findings revealed participants who received low-dose helical CT scans had a 15 to 20 percent lower risk of dying from lung cancer than participants who received standard chest X-rays. Dr. Bakaya implemented the protocol at the MemorialCare Imaging Center at Long Beach Medical Center in 2013. The program was accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR) in 2016.
Dr. Bakaya’s clinical interest is in oncology, especially early detection and management. She is well-versed in an array of imaging modalities for both diagnosis and intervention on both an inpatient and outpatient basis. Dr. Bakaya is a fellow of the American College of Radiology (ACR) and reviewer for the American Roentgen Ray Society.
In her free time, she enjoys hiking, traveling, cooking and spending time with her family including her husband, 12-year-old son, 10-year-old daughter and a 3-year-old very smart poodle.
