Sheila P Nguyen, MD

Sheila Nguyen, MD, attended medical school at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities and went on to complete her internal medicine-pediatric residency at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Nguyen is an internal medicine-pediatric hospitalist, taking care of both pediatrics and adult patients when they are in the hospital. As an immigrant, her family had instilled the value of education and the desire to give back to the community that has nurtured her. Because of this, she wanted to work in a career that would allow her to use her science background to give back to her community.

When Dr. Nguyen attended the University of California, Irvine as an undergraduate student, she had the opportunity to travel to Vietnam with a nonprofit group that provided free health care screenings and dental services to the remote villages in Vietnam. Dr. Nguyen learned a lot from her trip and experienced first-hand the disparity in healthcare in limited resource setting. During medical school, she went on another medical mission trip to Vietnam and also spent additional time training at Mulago Hospital in Uganda where she learned from her fellow colleagues, mentors, and local doctors.

The best part of my job is getting to know my patients, meet them at various stages of life, and hear stories about their lives outside of the hospital. It is a privilege to be able to care for my patients at their most vulnerable times and see their health improve.

Dr. Nguyen grew up in Vietnam and Orange County, California and is able to speak Vietnamese and English fluently. She spent her later years working as an assistant professor at the University of Minnesota for a year and then as an assistant professor at Penn Stage Milton S. Hershey for seven years. Dr. Nguyen has moved back to Orange County, where she grew up, and is dedicated to giving back to the community. During her free time, she enjoys cooking, reading, and traveling.
