Michael Duan, MD chose a career in medicine because it lies at the intersection between his interests in biochemical/anatomical science, commitment to lifelong learning, and humanitarianism. “I was drawn to hospital medicine because of the breadth and acuity of this medical practice and collaborative multidisciplinary environment of the hospital,” he says. “I found myself looking up to my hospitalist mentors throughout my training, which was a major influence in my pursuing hospital medicine as a career.”

Dr. Duan values his interactions with patients. “I take great satisfaction in effective communication with patients,” he notes. “The most fulfilling aspect of my job is being able to sit down and talk to a patient about their symptoms, explain the rationale behind various diagnostics and therapeutics, and to walk through a diagnosis together.” He wants patients to know that “I’m not perfect but I will always do everything in my power to do right by you. Acting in line with your values and trying to help you feel better will always be my top priorities.”

Of his time off, Dr. Duan says “I’m a big fan of sports and the outdoors--I can play almost every sport poorly! I love both listening to and creating music (I play the piano and sing). And I’m very food-motivated. I spend lots of my free time learning new ways to cook and exploring new restaurants.”
