John Bishop, Accomplished MemorialCare Leader, Selected CEO

MemorialCare, a nationally recognized nonprofit health system with hospitals in Los Angeles and Orange counties, announced that Long Beach Medical Center, Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital Long Beach, and Seaside Health Plan’s Chief Financial Officer John Bishop has been appointed CEO of the two hospitals. Bishop immediately assumes the responsibilities, succeeding former CEO Diana Hendel.

MemorialCare’s Long Beach operations include more than 8,000 employees, affiliated physicians, volunteers and associates and produce over $1 billion in annual revenues. Its Long Beach Medical Center and Miller Children’s & Women's campus is among the two largest hospital campuses in the West and is one of just a small number of campuses in the U.S. with both adult and children’s teaching hospitals, therefore, allowing for a lifetime of care in one location.

“We selected an outstanding individual with a demonstrated track record of success within MemorialCare as the new leader for our Long Beach hospitals,” says Barry Arbuckle, Ph.D., president and CEO of MemorialCare Health System, recently named among the Top 50 Health Systems in the U.S. by Becker’s Hospital Review. “John is a strategic, engaged and innovative leader with extensive experience in executive management and finance. That breadth of knowledge combined with John’s leadership in all aspects of health care delivery—from inpatient, outpatient and ambulatory settings to physician groups, health plans and community-based care—makes him the perfect choice to lead our Long Beach hospitals and programs. The Long Beach market is vitally important to our health system, and I look forward to working with John as he sets out to prioritize strategic initiatives that ensure the continued growth and success of our Long Beach campuses.”

Bishop has been an executive with MemorialCare since 2004. He started at MemorialCare as CFO of Saddleback Medical Center in Laguna Hills and San Clemente following 12 years as a Certified Public Accountant with Ernst & Young, LLP, consulting with some of the country’s best-known health care organizations. In 2009, he joined the Long Beach executive management team as CFO of Long Beach Medical Center, Miller Children’s & Women's, and Seaside Health Plan and oversaw financial operations of Memorial Medical Center Foundation, a philanthropic support organization for the two hospitals.

“I am both honored and humbled to be appointed CEO of MemorialCare’s Long Beach hospitals,” says Bishop. “We have a long history of providing outstanding care to our communities and my commitment and challenge is to improve the health care experience we provide to our patients and their families every day. The health care industry is facing unprecedented challenges. We will continue to transform health care in our communities through collaboration with our physicians, nurses, support staff and community, who support us in offering the highest quality and most compassionate care. My goal is to guide our organization on a path that maximizes the value we provide and results in a surrounding community that is as healthy as it can be.”

Bishop was selected after an extensive interview process, which included meetings with members of the MemorialCare, Long Beach Medical Center and Miller Children’s & Women's governing boards and with medical and executive leadership.

“Over the course of our interviews, we heard overwhelming support for an internal appointment, someone who would honor the achievements and time-honored traditions at Long Beach Medical Center and who has the strength, courage and drive to make the shifts required during these transformational times. That person is John,” says MemorialCare COO Tammie Brailsford. “John was identified early on in his tenure at MemorialCare, through its nationally recognized Leadership Academy that allows us to identify and cultivate leaders from within. With his sincere passion for patients and families, quality and value, he understands our quest to create value in all that we do. John has helped lead our nationally recognized organization to expand services beyond the hospital walls and make a tremendous difference in the health and well-being of the communities served.”

Among Bishop’s immediate priorities, he will lead growth in key centers of clinical excellence; strengthen relationships and opportunities with physicians; enhance the work environment to benefit all employees; maximize the experience of patients and families; replace the CFO position; oversee the addition of convenient, community-based outpatient centers; and pursue a strategy to advance Miller Children’s & Women’s in Southern California.

Bishop has served as treasurer of California Children’s Hospital Association, speaks frequently on health care topics and was just named among the Nation’s Top CFOs in Health Care by Becker’s Hospital Review. He is a long-time resident of Long Beach, Calif. and holds a degree in accounting from the University of Southern California.

“I feel very privileged to be appointed CEO of such an outstanding institution at this exciting, pivotal time in our history and look forward to working closely with the talented leadership throughout MemorialCare Health System to ensure that our Long Beach hospitals and community-based programs and services continue to realize their extraordinary potential,” adds Bishop.
