“As the coordinator and patient advocate for the Orange Coast Memorial Blood-Conservation Program, my role is to oversee services for all patients who wish to avoid blood transfusions due to religious convictions or personal preference. From the moment blood-conservation patients are admitted until the time they’re discharged, the entire hospital works as a team to provide the highest quality care possible, while ensuring that blood-conservation protocols and guidelines are followed. When I began working in this field 23 years ago with one of its pioneers, it was very difficult for patients to obtain surgical or medical services without agreeing to the use of donor blood. Today, blood-conservation practices are becoming the standard of care—and at Orange Coast, the level of commitment is remarkable. Our hospital is small enough to be personal, but big in getting the job done.”
