Stroke Volume

The Stroke Center at Saddleback Medical Center over 500 stroke patients each year. More than 60% of our patients go home or to a rehabilitation center after their stroke.

tPA Outcomes

Our tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) treatment times consistently meet the goals set by the American Stroke Association. Considered the gold standard, tPA is an FDA-approved treatment for ischemic strokes.

Our tPA door-to-needle times are consistently great.

  • American Heart Association Get With The Guidelines® recommended goals are to administer tPA in within 60 minutes 85% of the time.
    • In 2018, we gave tPA in 60 minutes or less 80% of the time.
    • In 2019, we gave tPA in 60 minutes or less 96% of the time.
    • In 2020 (through September), we gave tPA in 60 minutes or less 100% of the time.
  • We gave tPA 25 times in 2018, 33 times in 2019 and 25 times in 2020 (through September).
  • We have performed Mechanical Thrombectomy 26 times in 2018, 38 times in 2019 and 19 times in 2020 (through September).
  • Our treatment rate in 2018 was 17%, 20% in 2019 and 18% in 2020 (through September). The national average is 10%.

The Comprehensive Stroke Center at Saddleback Medical Center has received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines®- Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award. The award recognizes Saddleback Medical Center’s commitment to ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines based on the latest scientific evidence.
