Abdominal ultrasound is a painless exam that uses high-frequency sound waves to capture images of internal views of the stomach and nearby blood vessels. A special jelly is placed on the stomach while a wand-like device called a transducer is moved around. Internal images of the area show on a screen and can be recorded as a video and printed as a photo. This test lasts about 15–20 minutes.

A Doppler ultrasound may be used to capture images of the movement of blood through your blood vessels. Ultrasound can show plaque buildup in the vascular system and help detect abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA).
