Breast density, or dense breast tissue refers to the appearance of breast tissue on a mammogram. Women with dense breasts have more dense tissue than fatty tissue.

Dense breast tissue is fairly common. It is found in over 40% of women. Dense breasts increase the chance that breast cancer may go undetected, as the dense tissue makes it more difficult to feel or spot a lump. There are several possible causes for dense breast tissue. Women in their 40’s and 50’s are more likely to have dense breast tissue, as it tends to become less dense as you age. It is important to conduct monthly self-breast exams and have yearly mammograms to ensure nothing goes undetected. The radiologist who analyzes your mammogram determines the ratio of dense and non-dense tissue and assigns a level of breast density. At our MemorialCare Breast Center, we also have tomosynthesis 3D mammography, the latest-state-of-the-art imaging for dense breasts that allows radiologists to more clearly see the entire breast, including any dense tissue.
