About Me

Dr. Ghoniem, an internationally regarded expert in female urology, pelvic reconstructive surgery and voiding dysfunction, is a professor and Vice-Chair at the UC Irvine Health School of Medicine’s Department of Urology and Chief Division of Female Urology and Voiding Dysfunction. Dr. Ghoniem also serves as Chief of General Urology and Spinal Cord Urology for the VA Long Beach Healthcare System and is also the Director of UCI Urology at Long Beach Memorial.

Dr. Ghoniem completed his urology residency at the University of Alexandria, Alexandria, Egypt, in 1978 and, at that time, was appointed as Assistant Lecturer.  He left Egypt in 1980 for a fellowship in neurourology and female urology at Brown University in Rhode Island and also did his second urology residency at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Mich.  He served at Tulane University from 1987-2000 and in 1998 became full professor of Urology and Gynecology. Dr. Ghoniem moved to Cleveland Clinic Florida as the chief of Female Urology until 2011, where he formerly joined UCI.

Dr. Ghoniem is a member of several societies including the American Urological Association, Southeastern Section of the American Urological Association, Society of Urodynamics and Female Urology (SUFU), International Continence Society (ICS), International Urogynecology Association (IUGA) Dr. Ghoniem was a thesis supervisor to many fellows and is currently the Chairman of Research and Development Committee (IUGA). Dr. Ghoniem has improved and introduced many diagnostic and surgical techniques in the field of urinary incontinence and pelvic prolapse such as ISD classification, vaginal pack test, suburethral sling, Genisphere injection, bladder neck wrap, male sling, and the Transobturator technique. He published more than 150 papers, 10 videos, 27 book chapters, guest editor of 4 special issues journals and two text books.

Dr. Ghoniem served as a consultant of the surgical treatment group of the 1st International Consultation on urinary incontinence in 1998, and was a member of the same committee in the 2nd Consultation on Urinary Incontinence in 2001. NIH appointed him as a chairman for review panel on incontinence. He also served as a reviewer on the study sections of bladder physiology and urinary incontinence. Dr. Ghoniem is on the Editorial Board of Journal of International Urogynecology, Open Access Journal of Urology and Journal of Neurourology and Urodynamics. He is a reviewer of many journals and has been appointed as an expert reviewer for Journal of Urology, Urology, Endourology, Neurourology and Urodynamics and American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
