Join Our Corporate Partners—Partnerships in Excellence

Initiated in 2002, Memorial Medical Center Foundation's Partnerships in Excellence (PIE) program is dedicated to philanthropic support of life-saving medical equipment for patients and their families.

Each year, dedicated business leaders focus on critical equipment needs for diagnosis and ongoing care at Long Beach Memorial. Members gather twice a year at mixers hosted by local businesses to learn how their support makes a difference to patients and their families. They hear firsthand testimonies from physicians and their patients.

Since inception, PIE members have raised more than $1 million. The following are just a few of the items being used in the diagnosis and treatment of patients all over our campus right now:

  • A hyperbaric chamber, which allows our clinicians from anywhere on the campus to prescribe this healing treatment for adults and children undergoing wound care due to a trauma, or saving a limb where infection has caused the possible loss and much more.
  • iStan the human simulator used by our nursing students from Long Beach City and Long Beach State in their degree program.
  • A pediatric echocardiogram for the tiniest of patients at Miller Children's & Women's Hospital Long Beach in need of critical heart care.
  • The Electromagnetic Bronchoscopy (ENB) which has already diagnosed a very difficult to find cancer in the lung of an unsuspecting patient who came in for a routine X-ray.

Most recently our PIE team focused their philanthropy in support of the MemorialCare Heart & Vascular Institute. These involved businesses contributed $160,000 for the purchase of the CentriMag blood pump, a mechanical circulatory support device that can be used for left or right ventricular support. With a simple and intuitive manner of operation, it can be ready for use in seven to 10 minutes to stabilize patients in need of cardiopulmonary support. Its compact design makes it easy to move from the OR to bedside, or if necessary, during transport via ambulance or helicopter. It can be used to support the heart/lungs for months if needed.
