MemorialCare Cancer Institute - Gynecologic Oncology Program

The Gynecologic Oncology Program at the MemorialCare Todd Cancer Institute at Long Beach Medical Center is one of Southern California’s most prestigious — offering comprehensive care, advanced technology and innovative treatments. The Gynecologic Oncologists in this program are internationally recognized for their work in minimally invasive and robotic-assisted surgical techniques, cytoreductive surgery for advanced or recurrent ovarian cancer, fallopian tubes and primary peritoneal cancers. These physicians all hold academic positions at the University of California, Irvine and provide education and training for the Obstetrical and Gynecological residents and fellows. Several of our physicians are on the best doctor’s list for Orange County.

Gynecologic oncologists evaluate and treat women with malignancies of the female reproductive tract using the latest advances in surgery, chemotherapy and biological therapies. These therapies are given in our state-of-the-art Ambulatory Infusion CenterRadiation therapy is given in our newly updated radiation therapy department, including such innovative therapies for gynecologic oncology patients as brachytherapy and hyperthermia. The gynecologic oncologists treat women at high risk of developing certain gynecologic cancers and perform fertility preserving surgery for early stage cervical cancer and endometrial cancer.

The MemorialCare Todd Cancer Institute provides access to clinical trials for patients with ovarian, cervical and uterine cancers. These clinical trials include the national Gynecologic Oncology Group (GOG) trials and pharmaceutical trials, as well as doctor initiated quality of life trials. One example is The PARO project, which looks at the impact of a therapeutic baby seal robot on reducing stress, improving motivation and the quality of life in gynecologic cancer patients receiving chemotherapy in an outpatient infusion center.

The clinic is staffed with oncology certified registered nurses, who provide patient education and symptom management for patients undergoing treatment.
Supportive programs for our gynecologic patients include a weekly Gynecologic Cancer Support Group, Women Guiding Women: Cancer Support & Education (peer mentor program); a Friday morning walking group, Mind Body Oncology Coach and Kids, Tweens and Teens, a support group for children whose parents are undergoing cancer treatment.
