for Neck and Back Conditions
Now Paula can continue her active lifestyle thanks to the expert team at the Spine Health Center at MemorialCare Orange Coast Medical Center.
Sandy Davidson, 75, first noticed a mild hand tremor when she was a teenager. Her condition worsened, and when she discontinued her tremor medication due to interactions with other medications, the shaking took over her life.
Sandy read about Magnetic Resonance-guided Focused Ultrasound (MRgFUS), a new FDA-approved treatment for essential tremor in the dominant hand that is covered by Medicare. She contacted Theresa Stern, MPT, director of the MemorialCare Neuroscience Institute at Orange Coast Medical Center, to learn more about the innovative technology – which is only offered at two hospitals in Southern California – and later decided to move forward with treatment.
During the MRgFUS procedure, ultrasound waves pass though the skull to a specific point in the brain to destroy cells responsible for tremor, providing a therapeutic effect. Before Sandy’s treatment began with Devin K. Binder, M.D., Ph.D., neurosurgeon and medical director of the MemorialCare Neuroscience Institute at Orange Coast Medical Center, she was asked to write her name as best as she could. Two hours later, she signed her name again – only this time, it was perfect.
The entire team cheered – we were all in tears, I’m amazed that I could see results so quickly. Sandy Davidson

In addition to MRgFUS, which can also be used to treat Parkinson’s tremor, the team at the MemorialCare Neuroscience Institute offers expertise in treating, researching and educating about ataxia, dystonia and other movement disorders.
“Each patient undergoes a detailed evaluation before we create an individualized treatment program that may include medication, MRgFUS, deep brain stimulation, neurosurgery, physical therapy, speech or occupational therapy,” Dr. Binder said.

Arming the Immune System to Fight Against Cancer

MemorialCare has proudly served older patients for years, but to expand the resources available and meet the needs of older adults, MemorialCare 55+ was launched in August 2021.
Members of the complimentary program have even easier access to quality care with perks such as discounts at MemorialCare Orange Coast Medical Center, health and wellness information and a network of dedicated senior liaisons.
Beth Hambelton, senior program and community outreach liaison at MemorialCare Orange Coast Medical Center, has served older adults in the community for more than 18 years. She compassionately serves as a guide for senior patients and provides support throughout their healthcare journey.
“I’m passionate about senior care and thankful that MemorialCare has dedicated a program to ensuring patients feel valued, heard and respected, with convenient access to their healthcare,” Beth said.
To make care even more accessible, options for transportation were added to MemorialCare 55+. Now, members can request a round-trip, curb-to-curb shared ride for their MemorialCare appointments* – completely free of charge.
