Top-Performing South Orange County Hospital, a Recipient of the 2016 Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence from Healthgrades

Saddleback Memorial Medical Center has received the Healthgrades 2016 Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence. The distinction makes Saddleback Memorial one of the top 5 percent of more than 4,500 hospitals nationwide for its clinical performance as measured by Healthgrades, the leading online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals.

“At Saddleback Memorial, we’re proud of our exceptional physicians, clinicians and support staff, who are dedicated to improving all aspects of care, from service to outcomes to safety, at every touch point, for every patient, across the organization," said Saddleback Memorial Chief Executive Officer Steve Geidt. "It’s recognitions like these that prove we are fulfilling our mission of improving the health and well-being of the people in our community who entrust us with their care.”

Nationally, 260 hospitals out of 1,485 eligible hospitals were recognized as recipients of the Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence Award. Saddleback Memorial is among the top hospitals in the nation with high quality care across at least 21 of 32 common inpatient conditions and procedures, as evaluated by Healthgrades. Those conditions and procedures include but are not limited to: hip and knee replacement, pacemaker procedures and spinal fusion.

Saddleback Memorial’s achievements are part of findings released online and in the Healthgrades 2016 Report to the Nation. The report demonstrates how clinical performance continues to differ dramatically between hospitals both nationally and regionally. This variation in care may have a significant impact on patient health outcomes.

Saddleback Memorial Chief of Staff, Daniel La Mont, MD noted, “Our dedicated and highly-skilled staff makes all the difference in the level of clinical expertise we are able to provide, which is what enables Saddleback Memorial to excel. It’s an honor to be recognized for the outstanding outcomes we strive to achieve.”

Saddleback Memorial is among a select group of hospitals in the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Santa Ana, CA area with some of the best quality care across a broad spectrum of common inpatient conditions and procedures evaluated by Healthgrades.*

"During this same period, if all other hospitals performed at the level of Distinguished Hospitals for Clinical Excellence across these 19 procedures and conditions, 158,858 lives could potentially have been saved," said Evan Marks, Chief Strategy Officer, Healthgrades.

The awards are based on quality data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services on all hospitals nationwide that participate in Medicare. The period of evaluation for the 2016 awards involved inpatient stays from 2012 to 2014.

“When it comes to hospital selection, two of the most important questions to consider are where you are most likely to have a complication-free hospital stay and which hospital offers the best chance of survival, both during the hospital stay and in the weeks that follow,” said Marks. “Selecting a hospital that has achieved Healthgrades 2016 Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence award is one way to be confident that you will receive the right care.”

Saddleback Memorial also has been named one of Healthgrades America’s 50 Best Hospitals and recognized for quality in the following areas: Critical Care, Cardiac, Gastrointestinal, Orthopedic and Pulmonary. For more information, please visit: www.memorialcare.org/sbtop50

Healthgrades evaluates hospital performance for nearly every hospital in the nation; no hospital can opt-in or opt-out of being evaluated, and no hospital pays to be evaluated. Mortality and complication rates are risk adjusted, which takes into account differing levels of severity of patient illness at different hospitals and allows for hospitals to be compared equally.
