The PillCam™ capsule endoscopy system is an ingestible camera in a capsule form (size of a multi-vitamin) that allows for visualization of the esophagus, stomach, small bowel and colon. This noninvasive system produces clear images allowing physicians to detect GI abnormalities, monitor disease activity, and assess treatment effectiveness, without the need for sedation or anesthetics. Patients are equipped with a small recording device and should pass the capsule naturally without discomfort and doesn’t need to be collected after it’s passed.
The PillCam™ capsule endoscopy system provides physicians with tools that help them visualize and monitor lesions. These lesions may indicate or be a source of conditions such as Crohn's disease, obscure bleeding, or iron deficiency anemia not detected by upper and lower endoscopy. Other reasons your physician would recommend a capsule endoscopy include:
