Volunteering at Saddleback – Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What if I am unable to attend an orientation session?
A: Attending an orientation session is a mandatory requirement before becoming a volunteer.

Q: How often are the orientation sessions held?
A: Orientation sessions are offered every month with the exception of July, September and December.

Q: Are there ever any orientation sessions offered on weekends?
A: Orientation sessions are offered on weekdays only. We have orientation sessions during afternoons, as well as some evenings for those who are unable to attend during the day.

Q: How do I sign up for an orientation session?
A: There is no need to sign up. Simply show up on the date of the orientation session.

Q: Do I need to bring anything to the orientation session?
A: No, just a pen to take notes. A volunteer handbook will be provided at the orientation session.

Q: Is there a parking fee at the orientation session?
A: Parking in the hospital parking lot is free.  Just bring your parking ticket with you to have it validated. 

Q: What is a TB test?
A: TB test stands for tuberculosis.  We offer free TB testing at the hospital.

Q: Why does SMMC require two TB tests?
A: Because we it is possible for someone who is positive for TB to have a negative result during the first test.

Q: How often do I have to volunteer?
A: Our shifts are usually four hours per week, for a total of at least 100 hours.

Q: Are there weekend and evening hours available for volunteering?
A: Yes, we do offer weekend and evening shifts in some service areas.

Q: Why do I need background check? A: California law requires a background check for anyone volunteering in a hospital to ensure the safety of our patients.

Q: How soon can I begin my volunteer work?
A: It depends on how quickly you are able to schedule your TB test and provide the volunteer office with your health clearance letter.  Typically, it takes about three weeks from the date of your orientation session.
