How to Become a Volunteer

Pride, fulfillment, friendship and knowledge are only a few of the personal rewards that can be discovered as a volunteer at Saddleback Memorial Medical Center. The caring and generous members of the Volunteer Services Department are a vital part of our patient care team. To join our team; review the volunteer requirements, service areas & descriptions, and complete the online volunteer application.

Upon review and acceptance of your application, you will be notified of the next step in the process of becoming a SMMC volunteer. All applications are considered on a first-come, first served basis so we encourage you to submit your application in a timely manner. Applications will be kept for a period of six months only.

Saddleback Memorial’s volunteers provide critical assistance in our mission to enhance the health and well being of individuals, families, and our community. In order to fully integrate our volunteers into the various service areas that care for our patients and their families and support the hospital’s work, we ask that all volunteers meet rigorous standards. We realize these standards may be cumbersome. We ask for your patience and understanding, and appreciate your desire to help us support a safe and healthy environment for all SMMC’s patients, families, staff and volunteers.

Volunteer Standards:

  • Volunteers must be of the appropriate age for the programs in which they would like to volunteer. Unless otherwise noted on the specific service descriptions, generally you may begin volunteering at 16 years of age.
  • Volunteers must donate a minimum of 100 hours of service annually and commit to a regularly schedule work shift.
  • Volunteers must abide by all patient confidentiality guidelines, customer service expectations, departmental and hospital policies.

Pre- Screening Process:

  1. Volunteers must complete an on-line application.
  2. If selected, (based on many reasons) you will be invited to an Orientation/Meet and Greet session for further review of expected standards.
    • Background check is required if you are over 18 years of age (Must have a Social Security number to be processed)
    • Two TB tests (administered without charge by the SMMC Employee Health Nurse)
    • Health Clearance Letter from your Doctor (Form will be provided at the orientation)

If accepted as a Saddleback Memorial Medical Center Volunteer, you will be asked to:

  1. Purchase a volunteer uniform at a cost of $25.00 and pay dues of - $6.00 annually.
  2. Complete and show competence in your service area training(s) as related to your duties.
