Miller Children's Hospital Expands
To meet the growing needs of the community, Miller Children's Hospital is undertaking a $151 million expansion that encompasses constructing new buildings, as well as renovating existing space to create a comprehensive, integrated facility.
With the passage of Prop. 61—the Children's Hospital Bond Act—in November 2004, Miller Children's Hospital is one step closer to this much-needed expansion. Prop. 61 authorizes the State of California to issue $750 million in bonds to build and expand children's hospitals and purchase medical equipment. Miller Children's expects to receive $74 million in Prop. 61 funds; the additional funding required for the expansion will be obtained through philanthropy and operations.
Community members, patients, staff and physicians have been involved in the planning for the new building—a modern day castle whose inspiration was drawn from classic hero stories. Many parallels can be made between the heroes in these stories and hospitalized children; while the hero overcomes many obstacles and often finds refuge in a castle before triumphing over the enemy, pediatric patients often find refuge in the hospital and triumph over their disease or condition.
