Since its inception in 1946, the Children's Memorial Hospital Auxiliary has raised more than $13 million for patient programs and medical equipment through various fundraising activities to support Miller Children's. These fundraising initiatives include a gift shop in the hospital lobby, a designer fashion show and silent auction, two vendor fairs held in the spring and winter on the hospital campus, and baby photos for patients.
In addition to these fundraising initiatives, they provide a Birthday and Craft Club twice a month and Santa's Workshop during the holidays for patients at Miller Children's. New members are always welcome to the auxiliary as there is always an opportunity for anyone who wants to extend a helping hand for pediatric patients and their families.
For further information about this auxiliary or joining this group, please contact Leslie Schlauch at 562-430-5202.
The League strives to bring literacy to mothers and their babies at Miller Children's and Long Beach Memorial. Through the Books for Babies program, volunteers deliver more than 3,000 books each year to newborns and their mothers. This program has received praise from former First Ladies Barbara Bush and Laura Bush. The members also support the Stork Club, an orientation held once a month for expectant mothers. The Memorial Hospital Women's League is an excellent opportunity to make new friends through ongoing activities and volunteer opportunities. For further information about becoming involved in women's health care needs, put your talents to good use by joining the League. Contact Judy Bogart, chairman, at 562-439-3119.
A support group of parents and families of children with diabetes that collaborate once a month to bring awareness to this condition. This group coordinates and hosts several community events throughout the year, such as the Belmont Shore Holiday Parade, an annual picnic and various fundraising events that benefit and support the needs of children with diabetes. For further information about this fundraising group, please contact the Family Resource Center at (562) 933-8048.
Team Spirit was founded in 2000, as a small grass roots organization on the belief that more can be done to raise awareness and fight breast and ovarian cancer right here in our community. This group brings together patients with their family and friends to raise money for breast and ovarian cancer research, diagnosis and treatment. Proceeds from the annual Walk have helped to fund the one-of-a-kind Women Guiding Women: Cancer Support and Education program and a new Patient Navigator position at the MemorialCare Todd Cancer Institute at Long Beach Memorial. These programs are available to any woman regardless of their financial situation. For further information about this fundraising group and the annual Team Spirit Breast and Ovarian Cancer 10K, please contact Jocelyn Neely at (562) 933-1661, by email or visit teamspiritwalk.com.
A passionate group whose goal is to promote the services available at the Center for Women's Cardiac Health and Research at Long Beach Memorial through community outreach and education. This group hopes to expand women's cardiac research and reduce heart disease found in women by reaching more individuals in the community.
The Young Professionals Association (YPA) is a fundraising group made up of younger professionals from the greater Long Beach area. YPA's sole purpose is to support Miller Children's Hospital Long Beach, by providing necessary medical equipment. As a "New Generation of Giving," members range in age from 18-55 years of age. Founded in 2009 and administered by Memorial Medical Center Foundation, YPA's aim is to provide patients and families a better quality of living during their stay at Miller Children's.
In recent years, YPA raised funds towards:
- The purchase of a GAITRite Portable Walkway System for pediatric rehabilitation at Miller Children's, which helps children in pediatric rehabilitation to gain back mobility.
- Upgraded cribs for the Pediatric Emergency Room.
- Parent chairs for the Pediatric Emergency Room, so parents can wait and rest comfortably by their child's side.
- Waiting room televisions for Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Outpatient Specialty Center.
- Specially designed linen carts for the Emergency Department.
Memorial Medical Center Foundation encourages community members to get involved. YPA membership is open to anyone who contributes annually in support of Miller Children's. Become part of the next generation of philanthropists.
