Support Groups & Classes for Parkinson's Disease
Recognizing the devastating effects of Parkinson's disease upon patients and their families, American Parkinson Disease Association began the Parkinson's disease Support Group Program more than 40 years ago to motivate patients to maximize their strengths, minimize their impediments and achieve and maintain their full potential.
Support groups also provide caregivers with the opportunity to discuss their questions and concerns with sympathetic listeners who share their experience. Support Groups are designed to help patients, families and caregivers come to a better knowledge and understanding of the disease.
These groups foster a warm and supportive atmosphere where everyone feels equally important. The groups strive to replace negative attitudes and give a more realistic and clear understanding of the disease and the basic care and treatment required. Support groups provide the opportunity to exchange information with people who share common experiences.
Questions most often asked are "How do you feel?" "What do you do?" and "How do you handle it?" Each person has the opportunity to describe his or her own particular situation, and in many cases, helpful hints are exchanged. Many new and lasting friendships can and do develop among the members.
