da Vinci® Robotic Assisted Cardiac Tumor
(Atrial Myxoma) Removal

A Minimally Invasive Heart Surgery

Atrial myxoma is a common type of benign cardiac tumor that forms inside the heart cavity, most commonly in the left atrium. Robotic assisted cardiac tumor removal with the da Vinci® Si Surgical System is performed to remove atrial myxoma from the heart.

Innovative advancements in surgical techniques have allowed this surgery to be performed with the heart still beating and without separating the breastbone (sternum) and ribcage. Robotic assisted surgery is performed with the da Vinci® Si Surgical System (da Vinci), a robotic computer technology.

How da Vinci® Robotic Assisted Cardiac Tumor (Atrial Myxoma) Removal Is Performed

da Vinci S™ Surgical System (da Vinci) During the operation, the surgeon sits at a console in the surgical suite and monitors the video screens to direct the robotic arms to perform the surgery. Small keyhole incisions (one to two centimeters) are made on the chest, between the ribs. One of the incisions is used to pass a tiny camera, called an endoscope, to allow the atria to be viewed. The other two incisions are used to insert robotic surgical tools. While the heart is still beating, the surgeon delicately removes the cardiac tumor from the left atrium.

Benefits of da Vinci® Robotic Assisted Cardiac Tumor (Atrial Myxoma) Removal

Robotic assisted heart surgery offers shorter hospitalization, less bleeding, a reduced risk of infection, and a faster recovery.

Robotic assisted cardiac tumor (atrial myxoma) removal is only ideal for patients at low risk of complications. Each patient's diagnosis and treatment is unique and your physician will recommend the best approach for you.
