Inpatient Surgery Center - Planning Your Stay (staying in the hospital overnight).
You will be given a time of arrival by your surgeon’s office. You should arrive to the AM Unit at that time.
The day before your surgery, you should not eat or drink after midnight as a general rule, but be aware your doctor may have special instructions. Be sure to follow any specific instructions given to you by your surgeon or health team professional about your medications. Contact your doctor if there are any changes to your health such as a cold, fever, chills or other illness.
Things to Remember the Morning of Surgery
- Please do not wear any makeup, including lipstick, mascara, finger, or toe nail polish
- If you have long hair, braid it or pull it back with a rubber band
- Wear loose clothing and comfortable shoes
- If necessary, bring crutches or a walker
- Please do not wear any jewelry
- Please leave all valuables at home (i.e., money)
- Remove glasses, contact lenses and dentures prior to surgery
What To Expect On Surgery Day
- You will need to check in at the AM Unit at your scheduled time
- When it is surgical time, you will be asked to change into a hospital gown
- Wear loose clothing and comfortable shoes
- Remove glasses, contact lenses and dentures prior to surgery
- The preoperative area cannot be responsible for any valuables
After Surgery
You will not go to your assigned room until after your operation or procedure, so please do not bring items that you will need while you are in the hospital with you at this time. Please arrange for family or friends to bring these things to your assigned room after your operation or procedure is over and you are in the room. Room numbers are assigned while you are in the recovery room.
Items recommended for hospitalization include:
- Robe
- Slippers
- Toiletries that you use daily
- Any personal items you feel you will want or need during your hospital stay
After surgery, the surgeon will speak with the waiting family regarding the surgical outcome.
