What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)?

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is a medical procedure where 100 percent oxygen is administered in a special chamber at increased atmospheric pressures for conditions requiring an increase in tissue oxygenation or intravascular bubble reduction. By breathing pure oxygen at increased pressures, there is an increase of 10-15 times the oxygen concentrations in the plasma (a part of the blood that normally carries very little oxygen). The treatments are effective for a number of different medical and surgical conditions, either as a primary treatment or in addition to antibiotics and surgery. The treatments are regularly prescribed for the treatment of non-healing wounds.
