Research
mhvi_preventionThe research program at Memorial Heart & Vascular Institute keeps our physicians and staff constantly aware of the newest and best treatment opportunities and technologies for managing heart disease. Because we are on the cusp of leading research, MHVI offers the newest, cutting-edge drugs and technologies to our patients.

Overseen by MemorialCare’s Research Administration Department, the research program at MHVI involves studies of medications, devices and patient therapies long before they become available anywhere else. Research projects, as many as 20 ongoing at a time, provide important data for the future treatment of cardiac disease.

With a 30 year history of being a leader in cardiac research, MHVI physicians have pioneered many cutting-edge diagnostic tests and treatments for heart disease, including the use of pacemakers, treadmill stress testing and drug therapies for acute coronary syndrome. In 1978, our cardiologists performed the first percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) in Southern California. In 2001, we were one of the first institutions in the United States to use a synchronizing pacemaker, which is now recommended to treat heart failure by the American Heart Association.

Today, the field of cardiology continues to advance, and our research department is a leader in this area. New areas that are being studied include clinical research on cutting-edge equipment and pharmaceuticals and conducting studies that investigate new areas of heart disease treatment.

With more Americans dying of cardiovascular disease than any other medical condition, it is the commitment of Memorial Heart and Vascular Institute to be among the best heart centers in the country. We will stay on the cutting edge of research to remain a leader in providing innovative, quality cardiac care for the Southern California community and beyond for years to come.
