Diagnosis
Memorial Heart & Vascular patient The Memorial Heart & Vascular Institute at Long Beach Memorial and Miller Children’s Hospital offers a full spectrum of cardiovascular care, all in the convenience of one center. Starting with diagnostic tests, our patients receive the highest quality of care and have access to the most state-of-the-art diagnostic tools.

Memorial Heart & Vascular Institute offers patients both invasive and non-invasive diagnostic testing through use of the most technologically advanced cardiovascular equipment. Electrocardiograms, treadmill stress tests and echocardiography help physicians identify irregular heart rhythms and heart disease. We also offer ultrasound imaging, nuclear imaging, external cardiac monitors, CAT scans, MRIs and heart catheterizations and electrophysiology studies in our cardiac catheterization lab.

Electrocardiogram (EKG)
An electrocardiogram, better known as an EKG, is a diagnostic test that uses electrodes to record the electrical activity of the heart. It can assist in diagnosing a number of heart conditions, including problems with heart size, heart rhythm or the heart muscle. Even when there is no suspicion of heart disease, an EKG is often part of a general physical examination and the results used as a baseline for comparison with any future testing. We conduct an average of 42,000 EKGs every year at MHVI.

Echocardiography
Echocardiography (also known as an echocardiogram) uses ultrasound to produce images of your heart’s size, structure and motion. It provides valuable information about your heart health and helps gather information about abnormal rhythms (arrhythmias) in the heart. Every year, MHVI performs 10,000 echocardiograms on patients.

Stress Tests
A stress test helps to determine how the heart functions during exercise to diagnose coronary artery disease, possible causes of symptoms, heart-related conditions and safe levels of exercise. During the stress test, a patient uses a treadmill while heart rate, blood pressure and EKG are monitored. MHVI performs 4,000 treadmill tests every year on patients. We perform nuclear stress studies, echocardiography stress studies, Dobutamine stress echocardiography and Adenosine echocardiography.

At Memorial Heart & Vascular Institute, our physicians, surgeons and staff are here to help you regain control of your cardiovascular health.
