The cardiac rehabilitation program at Memorial Heart & Vascular Institute is a medically supervised program to help heart patients recover quickly and improve their overall physical, mental and social functioning. The goal of the program is to instill lifestyle changes in our patients that will stabilize, slow or even reverse the progression of cardiovascular disease.
The Rehabilitation program at MHVI includes:
- Counseling so the patient can understand and manage the disease process
- Beginning an exercise program
- Counseling on nutrition
- Helping our patients modify risk factors including high blood pressure, smoking, high blood cholesterol, physical inactivity, obesity and diabetes.
- Providing vocational guidance to enable the patient to return to work
- Supplying information on physical limitations
- Lending emotional support
- Counseling on appropriate use of prescribed medications
Services Provided
Phase I
- Inpatient program
- Conducted by Exercise Physiologists
- Monitored hall walking program
- Educational modality containing written and verbal instructions that include an explanation of coronary artery disease, fundamentals of exercise and the need for aerobic exercise, an outline of symptoms of exercise intolerance, and a home walking program
- Outpatient program
- Conducted by an RN and an Exercise Technician
- Up to 12 weeks of EKG monitored exercise (Three sessions per week, one hour per session)
- Blood pressure and heart rates monitored
- Exercise performed on treadmills, stationary bikes, rowing machines, Stairmasters and light weight lifting
- Individual dietary consultation
- Outpatient maintenance program
- Conducted by an Exercise Physiologist in consultation with the Program Director
- Two sessions per week, one hour per session
- Target heart rates identified
- Blood pressure and heart rate monitoring
- Outpatient clinic for CHF patients
- Conducted by a Physician and RNs
- Education using videos, written material and one-on-one teaching
- Pharmaceutical, dietary, social services counseling provided
- Physician consultations
- Supervised exercise
- Goal is to reduce hospital readmissions and improve quality of life
- Designed to provide individual support and counseling on a level that is recognized and praised by participants
- Entire staff is BCLS certified
- Nurses are ACLS certified and CPR instructors
Monday, Wednesday, Friday: 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Tuesday, Thursday: 7 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. - 6 p.m.
Congestive Heart Failure Clinic Thursday: 1:30 p.m. - 3 p.m.
