The CHE opened in 1974 as joint venture between Long Beach Memorial Medical Center and the University of California, Irvine. The purpose of the CHE is to provide continuing education for practitioners of the biomedical sciences and related fields, and public forums, lectures and instruction on health matters of interest to the general public. The CHE is a non-profit corporation under the parent company of Memorial Health Services (MHS).

To arrive by car, exit the 405 (San Diego) freeway at either Atlantic Avenue or Long Beach Boulevard, southbound; enter the parking lot of the medical center at Memorial Medical Center Drive; the Center for Health Education is located directly beneath the main entrance of the medical center, use the stairs leading down to the hospital lower level, to the left of the parking kiosk.
