James D. Leo, MD

Medical Director of Best Practice and Clinical Outcomes at MemorialCare Health System
  • Critical Care Medicine, Internal Medicine

Dr. Leo was born and raised in Hollywood, California. After experiencing New England life and weather while attending the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for undergraduate studies in Biology, he fled back to the warmth of California. However, he made a right turn instead of a left turn, and ended up in medical school at the University of California, San Francisco, thereby trading in the cold winters of Massachusetts for the constant fog of San Francisco.

After receiving his Medical Degree in 1981, Dr. Leo finally made it back home to Southern California, where he has remained warmly and happily since. After completing residencies in Emergency Medicine and Internal Medicine, with a one-year stint as an Emergency Department Director in between, he established his practice in Internal Medicine and Critical Care Medicine in Long Beach. Dr. Leo serves as the Medical Director of Best Practice and Clinical Outcomes for the MemorialCare Health System, overseeing the implementation of evidence-based medicine into the electronic health record across the MemorialCare system. His private practice emphasizes wellness and disease prevention.
