MemorialCare Named Among Best Places to Work by Computerworld Magazine
“Hospital information technology is very complex and changes rapidly,” says Scott Joslyn, senior vice president and chief information officer of MemorialCare Medical Centers. “Our approach has always been to consider the human element. We recruit some of the top IT professionals in our field and provide our team members with a great place to work.” “The recipients of this year’s Best Places to Work represent a diversity of industries from technology to finance to pharmaceuticals,” said Don Tennant, editor in chief, Computerworld. “However, each organization is united by a common theme—they embrace the value of IT talent within the workplace and the impressive contributions that these professionals make on a daily basis.” Among the hallmarks of MemorialCare’s information technology activities is the implementation of a new clinical information system which will greatly enhance the hospital system’s patient care and safety. Additionally, the new system will change the organization’s culture. With less time needed for charting and documentation, all members of our clinical teams will be more engaged in decision-making and enhancing the patient experience. It is a transformation that is intended to benefit the health system’s hospitals, physicians and patients. MemorialCare has also embarked on many innovative IT projects, including Vocera for hands-free wireless phone communications among clinical teams; installation of the TomoTherapy unit for ultra-precise radiation therapy; activation of the Stentor Picture Archiving and Communication Systems for transmission of digital radiology reports; development of the TouchPass single sign-on system which eliminates the confusion of multiple passwords and installation of a new bar-coding system for the hospital laboratories. MemorialCare includes medical centers in Los Angeles and Orange Counties: Anaheim Memorial, Long Beach Memorial, Miller Children’s Hospital, Orange Coast Memorial in Fountain Valley, Saddleback Memorial in Laguna Hills and San Clemente. The Best Places to Work feature will appear in the June 19th issue of Computerworld and online at www.computerworld.com/2006bestplaces.
