Meet Cynthia
Social Worker

Q: What makes your work
day satisfying?
A:
My satisfaction comes from the work that I do with people. We deal with so many different social issues from homelessness to end of life issues. As a social worker in a hospital we never know what kind of issues we are going to deal with. It can be as simple as resource giving to a difficult new diagnosis. The satisfaction comes from knowing that at the end of the day I helped someone in making good, appropriate decisions for themselves and their family.

Q: Why did you choose
your field?
A:
I chose my field because I get to talk with people and help them find clarity in their lives and their situations. The helping fields is gratifying in so many ways. We get to help people when they are in a vulnerable state physically and emotionally. We represent a non-judgmental environment to help them cope with all aspects of their lives.

Q: Tell us how you used best practice medicine to enhance a patient's life.
A:
Our social services department is dedicated to providing exceptional psychosocial services to our patients in assisting them in coping with hospitalization, diagnosis, prognosis, treatment and/or discharge needs. We work closely in collaboration with other team members to meet the needs of the patient.

Q: What exciting new technology, techniques or procedure(s) have you performed recently?
A:
I am so excited about the new up and coming MC*21 computer changes. I am anticipating going to the paperless system for charting purposes.

Q: What was your most rewarding day in the past year and why?
A:
Anytime a family recognizes what you do for them is rewarding. Because family & patients are so overwhelmed when we see them, getting a special call back or a thank you card makes it all worthwhile. Sometimes a happy occasion such as labor & delivery can turn tragic. The loss of a loved one is difficult but the loss of a baby can be incomprehensible. Being able to be present with expectant parents during their loss in a miscarriage or fetal demise and providing supportive counseling are some of my most memorable moments. It can be such a touching and tender time for everyone, including the staff. As tragic as the situation is the best use of my counseling skills and resources is so evident that I can affirm to myself that this is why I am here as a social worker.

Q: What advances or continuing education programs have you achieved?
A:
I am actively working on my licensure hours. Through this I have received valuable supervision time. I have also been able to go outside of the hospital into the community to participate in informative continuing education programs and round table situations to add to my resource knowledge.

Q: Tell us about the dynamics of your team, the size, collaboration and
talents, etc.
A:
We are fortunate at Anaheim Memorial to be staffed with an exceptional team of talented social workers. We have four Master's level and one Bachelor level social workers and two Marriage and Family Therapists. Each brings to the department vast knowledge and experience in working with patients in a variety of psychosocial issues across the life span. We collaborate very well in supporting each other in very difficult circumstances.
