Joel M. Cherlow, MD

Originally from North Plainfield, New Jersey, Dr. Cherlow earned his undergraduate degree from Princeton and then went on to do his PhD. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.) in Physics. After completing his doctorate, Dr. Cherlow moved to the University of Southern California in Los Angeles and conducted research on the use of lasers in the cauterization of gastrointestinal tissues, a first in the history of medicine. He went on to obtain his medical doctorate at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) and then completed his internship at the Wadsworth Veteran's Administration Hospital. He then went back to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) to complete his residency training and is now a clinical assistant professor.

For the past five years, Dr. Cherlow has been named by Woodward-White Publishing as one of the, Best Doctors in America, for both adult and pediatric radiation oncology from 2003-2008. He has also been named the Physician of the Quarter at Saddleback Memorial Medical Center, and was named the Pediatric Oncology Physician of the Year at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center in both 1993 and 1998. He is an active member of the Coast Institutional Review Board.

Dr. Cherlow is also one of the regional experts in the use of CyberKnife.

He is an impassioned advocate for pediatric oncology research and has served as the Director, Chairman, and Vice Chairman in The Children's Oncology Group (COG) over the past twenty-five years. Dr. Cherlow has also led a number of research programs in pediatric radiation treatments.He has authored over two-dozen articles and research papers on radiation oncology.

Dr. Cherlow retains memberships in numerous oncologic societies.

He is on the medical staff at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, Orange Coast Memorial Medical Center, and Saddleback Memorial Medical Center and is a clinical professor of radiation oncology at the University of California, Irvine.

Dr. Cherlow is also a Chairman and Vice-Chairman of the Radiation Oncology Committee of the Childrens Oncology Group. He is also active in the leadership of the health policy portion of ASTRO.
