Wendy
Date of Surgery: June 2, 2003Start Weight: 308
Current Weight: 155

Trying to avoid becoming a victim of her family health issues was most important to Wendy. “I was so nervous to have the surgery at first, but considering my family’s health issues, I knew I had to do something to avoid ending up with a serious condition. My mother, father, brother and sister all have had diabetes and were overweight. Since my father and brother both died of heart disease at a young age, I knew I had to do something to prevent that from happening to me. Before my surgery, I was always uncomfortable, I couldn’t tie my shoes or climb stairs and my back and knees always hurt. My blood pressure and glucose levels were through the roof and my heart beats were so irregular that I had trouble sleeping - my health was declining rapidly. I didn’t want to die young like my father and brother had, so I decided to have the gastric bypass surgery to save my life.”
Since the surgery, Wendy has gotten her life back and is able to do the simple things she wasn’t able to before, plus even more. “Now I weigh 155 pounds and I can easily tie my shoes! I play racquetball four times a week and usually play for two or three hours straight – something I would never have imagined doing before. My blood pressure is stable, my glucose levels are normal and the heart palpitations are gone. I love my life and I still wake up sometimes wondering if this is just a dream.”
In addition to getting her life back, Wendy can maintain her health and lifestyle without any reason to worry. “I neglected my medical checkups for years in fear of what the outcomes would be me. Since the surgery, I am now on top of it all and have made a promise to never be in poor health again. I am so comfortable again and my back and knees are great. My life is so much better and I'm thankful every day that I made the decision to have gastric bypass surgery!”
