Miller Children's Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Miller Children’s Hospital in Long Beach provides compassionate and comprehensive care to premature babies with extremely low birth weight, as well as critically ill full-term infants.

We treat more than 50 babies daily in our in our 69-bed regional (level III) NICU. In total, we care for more than 1,000 newborns, including many multiples, each year – more than any other hospital in Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego counties.

We were also featured in the book, A Baby E.R.: The Heroic Doctors and Nurses Who Perform Medicine's Tiniest Miracles, by Edward Humes.

• Neonatal transport team, which coordinates transfers from more than 20 hospitals
• An emphasis on family-centered care, with parents and family encouraged to spend time with their babies and learn how to care for them. We also encourage Kangaroo Care, where infants are placed skin-to-skin with a parent
• Specially trained occupational and physical therapists who help the babies by facilitating motor and sensory development
• A lactation support program, including on-site breast pumps, individualized assessment and teaching, and a breastfeeding supply store
• Medically Vulnerable Infant Program, a home visiting program coordinated through the Stramski Children’s Developmental Center that helps parents with questions or concerns as their babies grow and monitors the baby’s growth and development
