Emergency Department

we’re here for you.

Our pediatric emergency department and trauma center is one of only a few hospitals in the area that meets special criteria for providing pediatric emergency and trauma care. Each year, we treat approximately 25,000 children. We are recognized as an Emergency Department Approved for Pediatrics (EDAP) with staff certified in Pediatric and Adolescent Life Support (PALS). For the most serious of cases, our pediatric emergency department provides seamless transition to our renowned pediatric intensive care unit (PICU).

Being hospitalized can be a frightening time for a child. Our Child Life specialists are specially trained and available in the emergency department to help patients and their siblings understand and manage the hospital experience. The Child Life program uses teaching, communication and therapeutic play to lessen children’s anxieties about being hospitalized. Child Life specialists interact with patients to encourage a better understanding of medical procedures and address each child’s emotional/psychosocial needs, contributing to the hospital’s philosophy of family-centered care.

Milller Children’s Emergency Department is part of the emergency department at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, one of the newest and largest emergency departments of its kind in California and among the most advanced in the entire United States. One of Los Angeles County’s original trauma centers, the Emergency Department (ED) and Trauma Center underwent an $11-million renovation in 2002, expanding the department to 32,000 square feet with 53 beds and creating a dedicated children’s area.

State-of-the-Art Technology
We offer the latest technological advances in radiology—including CT scanning. We also offer bedside monitoring and registration and enhanced communication systems. Our department ensures patients receive the best emergency and trauma care available.
