• Screening Mammogram - A screening mammogram is an x-ray of the breast used to detect tissue changes in women who have no signs or symptoms of breast cancer. It usually involves two x-rays of each breast. With a screening mammogram, it is possible to detect microcalcifications (tiny deposits of calcium in the breast, which sometimes indicate potential presence of breast cancer) or a tumor that cannot be felt.
• R2 digital overread system - Anaheim Memorial uses the R2 digital overread ImageCheckerTM. This computer-aided detection (CAD) technology is a sophisticated tool that identifies suspicious lesions and assists our radiologists in the early detection of breast cancer. Based on clinical studies in which more than 40,000 mammograms were reviewed, the FDA indicated that use of this system would improve a radiologist’s breast cancer detection rate by 8%.
• Diagnostic mammograms - A diagnostic mammogram is an x-ray of the breast used to diagnose unusual changes, such as a lump, pain, thickening, nipple discharge or a change in breast size or shape. It’s also used to further evaluate changes detected on a screening mammogram. Diagnostic mammogram may also be necessary if it’s difficult to obtain clear x-rays with a screening mammogram due to special circumstances (e.g. presence of breast implants). Because more views of the breast are taken from several angles, a diagnostic mammogram takes longer than a screening mammogram. The technician may magnify a suspicious area to produce a detailed picture, helping the radiologist make an accurate diagnosis.
• Ductograms - A ductogram is a procedure performed on women experiencing spontaneous nipple discharge. A tiny cannula is inserted into the ductal opening of the effected nipple to inject a contrast media, and mammography images are taken. The purpose of the study is to look for ductal obstructions or abnormalities.
• Ultrasounds
• Ultrasound-guided biopsies - An ultrasound-guided biopsy is performed to evaluate a lump in the breast and is much less invasive than open breast biopsy. Ultrasound imaging is used to guide the core needle to the site from which the tissue sample is to be taken.
• Stereotactic biopsies - A computerized identification process, stereotactic biopsy is done to evaluate a lump that cannot be felt on breast examination but is seen on mammogram or ultrasound. It’s performed using a special type of X-ray instrument that can precisely locate the area of the breast from which the biopsy sample is to be taken.
