Endovascular Procedures

Endovascular surgery can be defined as the treatment of vascular disease from inside the blood vessel by inserting and deploying specially designed catheters and other devices via very small incisions. This less-invasive approach is not entirely new; it was first used with angioplasty in the 1970s. Technology has rapidly advanced; today there are numerous endovascular procedures available to patients, including:

  • Iliac artery angioplasty/stent
  • Renal artery angioplasty/stent
  • Lytic or mechanical clot removal therapy
  • Aortic stent grafts

What are the benefits of endovascular procedures?
For patients who meet certain criteria, endovascular procedures typically have lower risk and shorter recovery times than conventional surgical approaches. Below is a comparison of open/conventional vs. endovascular repair of an abdominal aortic aneurysm:
Approach Incision Repair Hospital Stay Recovery Time
Open/Traditional Large abdominal incision Surgeon excises (cuts out) the aneurysm and replaces diseased artery with hand-sewn prosthetic graft 7-10 days 2 to 3 months
Endovascular 2 small incisions in the groin for insertion of graft devices Surgeon deploys specially designed, covered stent grafts to re-line the diseased blood vessel, creating a new pathway for arterial blood flow. Overnight 2 to 3 weeks
